Visible Air as a design principle
In 1987, Tinker Hatfield designed the first sneaker with a visible Air unit in the heel. Inspiration: the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where structural elements sit on the outside of the building. Since then, every Air Max has been a variation on that principle. More Air, differently shaped Air, different placement.
The models in the line
The Air Max 1 has the semi-visible Air unit in the heel. After the Light, the 90 made that bubble bigger with a geometric midsole. The 95 introduced visible Air in both the forefoot and heel plus Sergio Lozano’s layered upper. The 97 brought full-length Air from Christian Tresser. TN and Plus are the European scene favorites with gradient colorways.
Which Air Max suits you
Slim silhouette and daily wear: Air Max 1. More cushioning underfoot: Air Max 90 or 97. A wider fit and more volume around the foot: Air Max 95 or TN. An Air Max 1 works under cropped pants, a TN calls for loose fit denim or cargo.
